The second meeting of the year was held last evening, November 3rd at the Sanibel Library. Chaired by Marty Harrity, special guests were Bob Janes, Lee County Commissioner District 1, and Shawn Seliger, Vice Chairman of Lee County Republican Party. Speakers were Maureen and Mike Valiquette who updated our membership on the history and progress of the grassroots coalition to halt the water discharges from Lake O. that are so destructive to our region. They also outlined the Restore Our Waters Forum on November 10th, 6:30pm, at Big Arts.

Next scheduled meeting is Thursday, December 1st.

The Club held its monthly meeting Thursday, October 5th at the Sanibel Public Library. After a thorough presentation by Library Board member Millie Ford, our members voted to support the November 8 referendum establishing the Sanibel Library District. The assembled members also unanimously voted to work to STOP the poisoning of our waters by the discharges from Lake Okeechobee, and to contact other Republican Clubs in Florida to secure their cooperation in the fight.

Topics for  discussion by experts, and consideration by members, in the coming months include water management, the war in Iraq, Social Security reform, the Sanibel Recreation Center, buildback and reconstruction issues, and the Sanibel Shared Use Path System.  The Club meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 at the Sanibel Library and they would appreciate attendance or support.

The June 2,2005 meeting of the Sanibel-Captiva Republican Club was called to order at 7:05 PM by President Marty Harrity. After the Pledge of Allegiance and the invocation were given Pres. Harrity introduced the guest speaker, The Honorable U.S. Congressman Connie Mack who gave an interesting rundown of recent activities in Washington.  These included funding for red tide, which hopefully will give solutions that will cut back manatee deaths, funding for repairs for I-75, grave concerns  re: Cuba/Venezuela and major issues on tax reforms and Social Security. It  was a pleasure to have Congressman Mack with us and we appreciate his taking time out of his busy schedule to bring us up to date.
It was decided to have a table representing the club at "Island Night" on June  7 at the Lee County Sports Arena. Also announced was the new website   www.sanibelcaptivarepublicans.org
The next meeting will be in Oct. at the Sanibel library. The meeting was adjourned at 8:07 PM There were 15 members present.
  Respectfully submitted, Evelyn Spencer
